Very fertile and biodiverse
Knuthenlund's woodlands cover a total of 225 hectares, divided between three woodland reserves - Ugleholt woods (196 hectares), Ørby woods (18 hectares) and Hovmands woods (11 hectares). Today, there are 4.4 hectares of untouched woodland.
Like the agricultural land, the woodland soil is characterised by its fertility and considerable biodiversity. Ugleholt wood has a rich flora, including blue anemones and seven different orchid species. The wood is also known for its many rare birds and numerous species of butterflies, as well as being home to a 400-year-old oak tree and a historic passage grave.
Ugleholt wood is intersected by the river Ørby Å, which has been designated an international spawning ground for sea trout. Like the estate's agricultural activities, the woods are run along organic principles without the use of artificial fertilizers and chemical crop protection products.
The woods primarily consist of high forest with maple, fir, oak, beech, ash and thuja, with a prize-winning oak plantation consisting of Dutch oak. Moreover, the estate produces Christmas trees and decorative greenery, which are also cultivated organically.
